The Neighbor Dorothy Show...

SPOILER ALERT - this post includes information through page xxvi...

Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!  Our Needle & Prose Book Lovers Club has officially begun!!  Have you cracked open your book and started reading?

My absolute favorite part of the beginning of this story was the introduction of The Neighbor Dorothy Show!  I swear I have fallen in LOVE with Neighbor Dorothy and I want to have a show just like hers!

Here are the discussion questions for this week:

  1. Do you think The Neighbor Dorothy Show can translate to today's world?  If so, how?
  2. The Smith family talks about being able to stop time.  Would you like to have this ability?  If you could, when would you freeze time in your own life?

Please comment below to answer the discussion questions for this week and get our book club conversation going!

Assignment for the week:

Please take a picture of yourself reading our first book in the wild and email it to needleandprose@gmail.com to be included in future blog posts.

Until next time...

Angela

  • The first thing I’d like to say is that I am thoroughly enjoying listening to this book. I finished it i’m sure that’s cheating however, I listen as I’m driving back-and-forth to work. It has been a joy I’m sad that it’s over. I think I’m going to load fried green tomatoes onto my Audible so I can continue listening to the author‘s voice. As far as neighbor Dorothy, what a joy to go back in time and listen to the simple pleasures of what’s going on in community and hearing recipes and just the simple life that women had ““ back in the day. Last night, I watched your YouTube with Lori and that fabric with the recipes on it stole my heart. I cannot wait to have that in my stash. I can’t imagine when I’m gonna use it, but it certainly is an heirloom and will be something that is a treasure in my life. I think neighbor Dorothy, we see in a lot of ways and the posts above this one talk about TikTok and all the influencers that we have in our life today certainly neighbor Dorothy was an influencer of her time.
As far as going back in time or stopping time or could we go back? I often think of that. And, oh my gosh, of course we would want to go back. We would not want to be dealing with whatever our trouble is today and if we could take our knowledge from today back with us to a time where we could somehow Circumvent or prevent whatever our woes are from today, we certainly would keep ourselves from harms way. However, time keeps going on and there is no Time Machine although I wish there were. so we just do the best we can every day and take the bumps and lumps along with us and trust in God and know that whatever is going on today. tomorrow will be better and whatever secrets are in our past or whatever secrets others may have or think they have about us and perhaps that’s getting ahead in the books since you know I’ve read or listen to the whole thing anyways happy reading ladies. I hope you’re enjoying the book as much as I did love to you all. Love you Angela. Hope everyone’s enjoying autumn! Plz know that I used the speak to phone to post this, so if my punctuation is not correct please forgive me…thank you

  • I think we could argue that shows like Neighbor Dorothy have progressed with time. The younger generations seem to get their information from TikTok. My daughter is always trying new recipes she found on there. Plus I will admit that I have looked on there for cleaning suggestions, etc. Neighbor Dorothy is called an Influencer now.

As for stopping time, I wish I could stop some things that come with age, like needing knee replacements, but still let time move forward.

  • I don’t think the Neighbor Dorothy show would survive in today’s world of podcasts, highlight reels, YouTube videos & social media. I think the content is not relevant to young people today who have such busy lives & get their news in other ways. I don’t think many of them would be interested in cake recipes or hearing someone play the piano. Maybe it would be appealing to farm wives or homesteaders who would be interested in the content & might have the time for it. Unfortunately, I don’t think it would appeal to today’s millennials, but the baby boomers like myself would enjoy it once in awhile.
As far as stopping time, I agree that I wouldn’t want to because I might miss something good & we could all use some good news these days. If I could stop time for just a short while, I would go back 20 years to 2005 when I had my three boys at home & my husband and I weren’t retired yet. My mom & dad were still alive & they were such an important part of our family life. Our house was a beehive of activity & it was chaotic at times, but the house was always full-full of kids, friends, family & love. I miss those times.

  • 1. I think the world today needs shows like Neighbor Dorothy. I am not sure that it would draw the patronage necessary for success. A show that is all positive conversation, and promotes family and community values would be a refreshing change. Sharing recipes and homey arts would also be a wonderful change from most of today’s “entertainment.” If you find a way to have a show like Neighbor Dorothy, count me in as part of your regular audience. It is possible that a show like this could be even bigger than the one in the book. With most entertainment being recorded, you are not limited to enjoy your chosen shows at a time that works best for you.
    2. I am 73 years old. I have enjoyed all of the phases of my life including the current one – retirement. There are of course, small parts of getting older that I would not mind going away (arthritis). I am excited to see what the Lord has in store for me during the rest of my worldly life.

My husband will take a picture of me reading my book in the wild around my house and I will send it to you as soon as possible.
